A Casual Perspective
Thomas Joseph
Thomas Joseph is a resident composer of Virginia Beach, VA and a graduate of Shenandoah Conservatory (MM: Music Composition) and Old Dominion University (BM: Music Composition). Joseph is also a faculty adjunct with ODU’s Community Music Division for composition, theory, and other music subjects.
As a high school freshman, Joseph appeared as a week-long featured composer for the Tidewater Winds of Norfolk. He also received national and state awards in music contests. In the academic realm, Joseph has composed original music for high school bands, jazz bands, marching bands, and local ensembles; served as a guest conductor for local ensembles, a clinician for student ensembles, and served as a judge for solo festivals.
As a professional composer, Joseph composes in a wide variety of musical mediums and levels, ranging from early academic to highly advanced contemporary “new” art music. He has many works for piano, voice, solo instruments, traditional small ensembles, mixed ensembles, string orchestras, wind ensembles, as well as full orchestras.
During study under Jonathan Newman at Shenandoah Conservatory, he has experienced sessions with Pulitzer Prize Winners David Lang, John Corigliano; composers David Little and Eric Whitacre; and performance ensembles such as the American Modern Ensemble, Newspeak, and Eighth Blackbird.
